There's A Little History With This Bell
|
|
The Bell
The large bell mounted directly across the road from the house is often used as a landmark, especially for those people who are going to the Cranesville Swamp which is very near.
At one time the bell was part of the Red Oak School in southern Garrett County. When the one room school closed in 1953 the building was razed, and the bell was salvaged and moved to the home of a private resident. It was later obtained by Paul Eary who mounted it in it’s current location.
Red Oak School has the infamous distinction of being one of the few schools in Garrett County which experienced gun violence. It was there in 1917 that one student shot and killed another.
